The BC Recycling Regulation:
The BC Recycling Regulation requires “producers” (often first importers to the province including manufacturers, distributors and retailers) of designated electrical products (see below) to have an approved product stewardship program in place by July 1, 2012. The program must include a province-wide collection system where consumers can drop off end of life products without charge, as well as a system for recycling the collected products. For more information about who is a “producer” under the Recycling Regulation, visit the Producer Page.
If your company is considered obligated under the Regulation for products covered by CESA’s program, becoming a CESA member will provide you with convenient and immediate access to a recycling program you are obligated to establish and operate in order to be considered compliant under the Regulation.
CESA’s small appliance program launched on October 1, 2011 (see below).
This program will be expanded on July 1, 2012 to cover additional product categories.
Program Expansion:
The CESA program will be expanded as of July 1, 2012 to cover some of the additional product categories outlined in “phase 5” of the electric products schedule of the BC Recycling Regulation, including:
- Power tools
- Sewing machines, knitting machines and other textile processing machines
- Sports, leisure and exercise equipment
- Arts, crafts and hobby devices
To view the list of additional products included as of July 1, 2012, please visit the Program Products page
View the CESA “part 2” stewardship plan, which has been approved by the BC Ministry of Environment.
CESA’s membership agreement will be revised shortly to allow producers obligated by the BC Recycling Regulation to join CESA for these expanded product types. Please contact Julie at Julie@cesarecycling.ca for more information.
Please also review the Members FAQ and the various Members pages for further information on this program.
Small Appliances:
The BC Recycling Regulation includes a category for small appliances. If your company is considered obligated under the Regulation for these products, you may still join CESA for this program. The Small Appliance Recycling Program launched October 1.
Membership in the program is open to all Producers. The program is funded by fees paid to the program by Producers, based on quantity of program products sold in BC.
